A Word from the Acting Dean

Catherine Lee - Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social SciencesThe Faculty of Social Sciences provides high-quality education through disciplinary and multidisciplinary programs that are designed to help students become socially committed citizens. In our cutting-edge social sciences programs students develop skills to contribute to Canadian society and to the international community. We are devoted to providing the highest quality student experience.

The Faculty of Social Sciences takes pride in its bilingual character and history. Our programs draw both on Anglo-American and European traditions and on cutting-edge research. Almost all programs are offered in Canada’s two official languages. During your studies at the Faculty, you will have the opportunity to experience both Francophone and the Anglophone cultures, enhance your second language skills and possibly take part in an international exchange.

The Faculty offers Honours programs in Anthropology, Conflict Studies and Human Rights, Criminology, Economics, International Development and Globalization, International Studies and Modern Languages, Public Administration, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Women’s Studies and Sociology. There are also thirteen joint honours, many of which are offered in conjunction with the Faculty of Arts, and two new integrated programs with the Faculty of Law. The Faculty also offers Co-op programs in Anthropology, Conflict Studies and Human Rights, Economics, International Development and Globalization, Public Administration, Political Science, and Sociology. In addition, French immersion studies are available in many of our Honours programs. Our programs offer both the specialized education required to achieve your future goals and the possibility of enrolling in a joint program of study, rounding out your cultural background and enriching your basic education.

Each year, some 250 professors, 116 of whom have been hired over the last five years, teach more than 1,300 courses annually; covering the fundamentals of many disciplines, as well as specialized topics addressing the crucial issues we face as individuals, as a society and in the international arena. Studying at the Faculty of Social Sciences means participating in a multicultural, bilingual environment at the crossroads of two of the greatest cultural and intellectual traditions.

The Faculty’s administration and many of the Faculty’s academic units are housed in the Desmarais building where students enjoy classrooms, a student lounge, a study area, a computer lab, a mentoring centre and rooms dedicated to student associations.

I encourage you to benefit from this stimulating environment and to enrich it by your presence and help build a better future.
