Disciplinary and Multidisciplinary Programs
- Anthropology
Anthropology provide students with the tools they need to analyze and understand the vast range of human societies throughout the world. In the process, students learn to apply anthropology‘s time-honoured cross-cultural, holistic perspective to understand cultural change globalization and development. Anthropologists help craft solutions for contemporary social and environmental issues.
- Conflict Studies and Human Rights
This program covers issues of intranational and international tensions, fundamental human rights, and conflict resolution processes, as well as a range of underlying themes including: peacemaking and peacekeeping; inequality, justice and democracy; singular and plural identity; and nationalism, terrorism and so-called traditional conflicts.
- Criminology
Criminology involves the scientific analysis of crime, of the criminalization process and of social control. Criminology is also an applied discipline in which students learn various forms of intervention to help resolve problems and conflicts. It focuses on five broad questions, notably the nature and dynamics of behavior that contravenes social norms and the social construction of norms and of the notion of crime.
- Economics
Economics is the discipline that seeks to understand such phenomena and analyze the relationships between them. More precisely, economics examines how a country's resources are used to fulfill the needs of its citizens. It is concerned with the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.
- International Development and Globalization
As the world undergoes profound transformations in the wake of globalization and other factors, this program provides a better understanding of the stakes involved in international development and the move toward a global economy. It also offers a solid grounding in several disciplines, such as political science and sociology, and general knowledge in economics.
- International Economics and Development
The program studies economics in the context of globalization and its repercussions on individuals, private- and public-sector bodies, and nations. It anchors economic concepts in an understanding of economic development factors and the economies of developing and expanding countries.
- International Studies and Modern Languages
In this program, students acquire in-depth knowledge of international affairs, master their second language and gain proficiency in a third language. At the same time, students learn about the world, international realities and relations between cultures.
- Public Administration
The study of public administration seeks to advance our understanding of how governments work and of the role they play in contemporary societies. It deals both with the nature of government policies in various sectors (from economic development to the protection of citizens’ welfare and health) and with how the public service works to formulate and implement government decisions and programs.
- Economics and Public Policy
The program includes courses in economics, public administration, political science, and sociology. Public policy is a specialized area of economics that calls for knowledge not only of the economic issues related to public policy and the public sector (such as municipalities, regions, provinces and nations) but also of fields such as labour, health and the environment.
- Political Science
Political science addresses human forms of organization and relationships when the division of resources and mobilizing support for plans and decisions affecting society are at stake. It has to do with political institutions, political participation in all forms, including disputes and resistance all over the world, ideologies, parties, social groups and movements, international affairs and diplomacy, globalization issues, evolution of different political regimes, the understanding and resolution of conflicts.
- Psychology
The goal of psychology is to understand the structure and functioning of mental activity and associated behaviours. As with any other scientific knowledge, psychological knowledge is established via observations and experiments. Psychology includes several research areas, notably: psychology of the lifelong development, neurosciences, psychopathology, social psychology...
- Social Sciences (General)
This program in social sciences allows students to explore the social sciences without having to choose a specific discipline right at the beginning of their studies. Hence, students cover the fundamentals of social sciences while retaining the possibility of studying three specific areas of their choice. In the process, students can discover new passions: criminology, economics, political science, public administration, sociology, women's studies and more.

Service social (offered in French only)
This program trains specialists who can perform case work with groups and individuals, and who have a solid grasp of both the theories and the social and political contexts surrounding social work. Through a combination of classroom instruction and two full practicum sessions, students learn to apply intervention techniques in the context of issues linked to poverty and social inequalities (based on sex, ethnicity, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
- Sociology
Sociology studies how societies work, how they’re structured and how they have evolved over the centuries. It also studies the distinguishing features of the myriad cultures that have emerged and formed societies throughout history. Sociologists have a special interest in social change, and they examine society from all points of view in an attempt to understand that change.
- Women's Studies
The Institute of Women’s Studies offers an intensive inter- and multi-disciplinary program on the status, the experiences and the contributions — both past and present — of women in society. Focusing on some of the critical issues driving today’s society — globalization, international development, post-colonialism and minority rights — the program integrates scientific and practical knowledge contributing to personal and collective well-being.

- List of Joint Honours Programs
Joint Honours Baccalaureate Programs offer students of the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences a sound theoretical and methodological training in two related or complementary disciplines. Such training answers the need for specialization and versatility.
The programs guarantee integrated-learning progress in two disciplines for the entire four years of the baccalaureate, with the training acquired in one discipline serving to reinforce the knowledge in the other. Complementary Minors
- Gerontology
Gerontology combines the study of aging with several disciplines in social sciences, health sciences, and the arts. The program, which develops knowledge and practical skills related to aging and the elderly, is designed for students and professionals working with the aging population, and for anyone interested in health, social services, social policy and research on aging-related issues.
- Global Studies
The program in Global Studies allows students to focus part of their studies on phenomena and processes related to globalization. As massive change sweeps the planet, the ability to grasp the issues involved in globalization is central to fully understanding our society.

Social Science of Health
This complementary program is for students who want to explore health-related issues using the analytical lenses offered by the six disciplines that comprise the social sciences at the University (criminology, economics, social work…). Each contributes to enriching student’s understanding of the complex social factors that affect health. Research on the ”social determinants” of healthy, for instance, has sled light on the complex factors that can determine the health of populations.

- Droit civil et développement international et mondialisation (offered in French only)
Ce programme vise à assurer la formation de juristes capables de bien comprendre la problématique du développement international et de la mondialisation et de contribuer à différents titres à l'utilisation du droit dans le contexte de la coopération internationale. Cette formation peut mener à diverses carrières juridiques dans les domaines suivants : organisations gouvernementales et non-gouvernementales, les organismes humanitaires, les cabinets internationaux, les entreprises multinationales.
