History
The 1970s recognized the importance of developing a field of study and research that took greater account of the place and the role of women in society. At the University of Ottawa, this acknowledgement took place in several stages: first, by integrating women’s studies courses into programs as various as English, history, Lettres françaises, psychology, political science, religious studies and sociology; in 1983, by creating an inter- and multidisciplinary undergraduate program under the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost; finally, in 1995, by establishing a bilingual pluridisciplinary master’s program involving the following disciplines: public administration, criminology, law, education, English, history, Lettres françaises, international development and global studies, music, philosophy, political science, human kinetics, religious studies, nursing, sociology, and counselling and spirituality at Saint-Paul University. Yet it was in the spring of 1999 that this field of study and research earned its most important advancement in terms of visibility on a local, national and international level. The Women’s Studies Program was officially replaced by the Institute of Women’s Studies, a change which clearly illustrated the growth and vitality in this field at the University of Ottawa. It was not until 2004 that the IWS went under the administration of the Faculty of Social Sciences. A year later, the Institute acquired the Canada Research Chair in Gender, Migration and Health. Since 2008, an independent master’s program and a doctoral program in women’s studies have been created and launched, offered in both French and English.
Homecoming 2008
The Department of Criminology is celebrating its 40th anniversary! Be a part of the celebration! Come meet with former professors, classmates, and friends and hear their news from the world of criminology. From then to now, here and abroad, the Department of Criminology is and has always been a leader in the field of social and criminal justice. And you have contributed to this field over many years!!
As Chair of the Department, I am always very impressed by the state-of-the-art contributions from my colleagues and our alumni, as well as the effervescence and dynamism that animate the department.
Located in Ottawa, Canada’s national capital, the Department, as you already know is in an advantaged position to observe, participate and act on the major debates and decisions on the subjects of criminality, criminalization and social and criminal justice in Canada and around the world. This rings even truer in our globalized world. Criminology is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach, to which you have contributed in your practice, and it touches on various and stimulating areas of research to which our professors and students work can attest to over the last 40 years.
With the creation of a new doctorate program in 2003, three research centres are also an integral part of our university and departmental life (www.socialsciences.uottawa.ca/crm/eng/index.asp). I am very proud of our achievements and of the quality of life we offer our students, employees and professors. As the only bilingual Department of Criminology in Canada, our Canadian brand also extends to an international scope. In order to celebrate our history, our future and to reestablish old ties, we invite you to attend the round table and reunion dinner.
