Welcome to the School of International Development and Global Studies
Created in June 2008, the School of International Development and Global Studies (SIDGS) unites the Honours in International Development and Globalization and the Masters in Globalization and International Development.
News
- In 2009-2010, APUO (Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa) will fund between 50-60 awards of $1000 each. Application forms are available on line: www.apuo.ca/Info/studentaward/bourses.htm, at the APUO office (room 348, University Centre) and at the Financial Aid and Awards Service (1st floor, University Centre). - On September 2, 3 and 4, the University of Antilles-Guyane (UAG), which is established in Guadeloupe, Martinique, and French Guiana, three French overseas departments, hosted a multidisciplinary delegation from the University of Ottawa.
- The Centre Training and Awards Program (CTAP) is the focal point of training within IDRC and combines policy, management, and service functions for IDRC-funded training awards. By supporting academic study and offering opportunities for hands-on experience, IDRC: helps countries of the South gain a critical mass of trained and experienced researchers to promote sustainable and equitable development in their regions; gives a new generation of Canadians an opportunity to participate actively in international development issues and to consider careers in this field.
- In the hopes of joining the fight for women's rights and the fight for their well-being, Stephanie Lapensee, a student at the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa, has created a non-profit Initiative which organizes benefit concerts and events all around the world. This Initiative will hold it's first benefit concert in Los Angeles on June 26th in the hopes of contributing to the work of the International Initiative on Maternal Mortality and Human Rights.
- The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute published an article on the public lecture given by Najat M. Nag, Managing General Director, Asian Development Bank, on April 23.
- The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has recently announced grant recipients for 2009. The Council supports research projects that address important issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance. Congratulations to our colleagues:
Paul Haslam, professor at the SIDGS, who received a regular research grant of $82,000 for his project “Norms of Engagement: The Micro-Politics of Corporate Citizenship in Latin America.”
Alberto Flórez-Malagón, professor jointly affiliated with the SIDGS and the Department of History, who received a regular research grant of $52,000 for his project "Many 'Norths', Many 'Souths,' Representations of the Foreign and Social Differentiation in Colombia, 1900-1970."

- July 11 2009: Professor Nipa Banerjee writes about the situation in Kabul on the eve of the presidential election in " The Shine is off democracy in Afghanistan" published in the Ottawa Citizen.
- July 2009: Professor Susan Spronk published an article entitled "We Want Partners, Not Bosses: Returning Oil, Gas to State Control" in the journal FOCAL Point.

- May 27 2009: Nasser Ary Tanimoune, from the School of International Development and Globalisation, gave an interview to Les carnets internationaux de la 401 on Radio-Canada Région Ontario, about the rental of millions of hectares of arable land in Africa to foreign businesses. - May 16 2009: Professor Nipa Banerjee's article entitled "Role of NGOs in Post-Taliban Afghanistan: Missed Opportunities But Way Forward" has been published in the Asia Briefs Journal of the Maxwell School of International Affairs of Syracuse University.
